The Land War in County Galway

Slider4Our November meeting took place on Wednesday November 12th in Lackagh Parish Centre at 8:15pm.

Pat Finnegan delivered a talk entitled The Land War in County Galway, based on his recently published book, Loughrea, That Den of Infamy; The Land War in Co. Galway, 1879-82 (Four Courts Press, July 2014). A large crowd of members and friends attended to hear Pat’s excellent account and analysis of the events detailed in his book.

The talk described events during the Land War of 1879-1882. The campaign was accompanied by a surge in agrarian incidents and the authorities responded with two Coercion Acts in 1881 and 1882 that resulted in the internment without trial of 166 individuals in Co. Galway. Based on extensive research in primary sources, Pat Finnegan placed these events in their social and political context.

The library opened for members from 7.45pm on the evening.

Pat Finnegan is Professor Emeritus of Medicine at NUI Galway and a retired consultant physician. He is also the author of The Case of the Craughwell Prisoners during the Land War in Co. Galway, 1879-85, published by Four Courts Press in June 2012; it examines the wrongful conviction of the author’s grandfather, Patrick Finnegan, and RIC Constable Michael Muldowney.
