The Connaught Rangers

Our September meeting took place on Wednesday September 10th in Lackagh Parish Centre at 8:15pm. Our speaker on the evening was Joe Loughnane who delivered an interesting and informative account of The Connaught Rangers.

In his talk, Joe outlined the story of the Connaught Rangers with a special emphasis on their involvement in World War 1, and their demise in 1922. His talk was illustrated with photographs and slides of places, artefacts and memorials in Galway connected with the Rangers, as well as an impressive display of memorabilia and artefacts which he has collected over the years. Joe was ably assisted by Colman Shaughnessy of Loughrea, who provided technical support as well as informative comments on various aspects arising from the presentation.

Joe Loughnane is a native of Loughrea and has recently completed a master’s degree in Military History and Strategic Studies at NUI Maynooth. For the past number of years he has been involved with the Loughrea Memorial Group.

The library opened for members from 7.45pm on the evening.
