Counterproductive: The Reproductive Loan Funds and the Great Hunger

Steve Dolan, Irish Workhouse Centre, Portumna

Our May meeting will take place on Wednesday 8 May at 8pm in Lackagh Parish Centre. Our guest speaker will be Steve Dolan from the Portumna Workhouse, who will give a talk on Poverty Relief Loans in the 19th Century.

The lecture is titled ‘Counterproductive: The Reproductive Loan Funds and the Great Hunger’. Reproductive Loans were provided in the 1830s and 1840s to the industrious poor and were intended to encourage industry and relieve poverty. The outcome would prove to be quite different.

Giving the talk is Steve Dolan, a historian based in East Galway. He holds an MBA from NUI Galway and an MA in History from UL. He is manager of the Irish Workhouse Centre in Portumna, and editor of the South East Galway Archaeological & Historical Society (SEGAHS) Journal
(http://www.clonfert.org/download.htm).

The WFHA Library will be open for members at 7:30pm.
