Agent, Tenant, Advocate and Agitator – Michael Kelly, The Burke & Pollok Estates

Our November meeting took place on November 13th at 8:15pm in Lackagh Parish Centre. The speaker was Pauline Scott (PhD student, NUI Galway). The title of her talk was Agent, Tenant, Advocate and Agitator – Michael Kelly, The Burke & Pollok Estates.

Pauline’s talk centered on an examination of the agent’s role in a County Galway setting between the Famine and the advent of new owners via the Encumbered Estates Court. She focussed on Michael Kelly who was a land agent as well as a tenant and an advocate for tenants on the Burke and Pollok Estates in Glinsk, County Galway.

Commenting prior to the meeting, chairman Sean Flanagan said that it would provide a wonderful opportunity to obtain deeper insights into the role of a land agent faced with conflicts of interest in his interaction with tenants and Irish society in that era. Michael Kelly was an important figure in the heavily populated Creggs/Glinsk area at that time.

The text of Pauline’s talk is available to members in the members area of the website.
