Memorial Cards were scanned into history at a special 2-day event hosted by the Western Family History Association in Lackagh Parish Centre on Saturday November 2nd and on Sunday November 3rd. The scanning sessions were held from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday and from 3pm to 5pm on Sunday.

Members of the association and the public were invited to bring along their memorial cards which were scanned while they waited and returned immediately to each person. Members were invited to bring their friends.

Memorial cards hold a wealth of information that is of huge interest for people tracing their ancestors and to family historians and genealogists. But, as generations move on and as families die out in a locality, there is a risk that memorial cards may be discarded or destroyed. If so, the associated family details of deceased persons are lost forever to their descendants and to family historians.

The purpose of the 2-day event at Lackagh was to preserve, secure and store this information for people tracing their ancestry. It was a continuation of the project commenced during Heritage Week in August 2012. Memorial cards were scanned and recorded by WFHA personnel. The donors of the cards were asked to sign a consent form giving permission to the WFHA for the use of the recorded information in family history research into the future.
