A Sense of Place – Through Townland Names.

Our AGM took place on Wednesday, 15th January 2014 in Lackagh Parish Centre at 8:15pm. The speaker on the night was Finbarr O’Regan, Athenry.

Finbarr’s topic for the talk was “A Sense of Place – Through Townland Names”, with illustrations from the Book of Survey and Distribution maps, Larkin’s 1812 map of Athenry, the Ordnance Survey 1842 Co Galway map and local publications.

For his presentation, Finbarr used the Parish of Athenry as a case study. He highlighted some of the history and mythology of the townlands and the people and folklore associated with them.
Finbarr is a retired National School Teacher who has worked with 3rd level students arising from projects with his own pupils at Carnaun School by using the “room outside”, that is, nature, the landscape, archaeology and townlands. He has had students from Europe, USA and Canada at the school as part of their studies.

Finbarr’s website athenry.org contains a wealth of historical information on the Athenry area.

Finbarr’s talk was preceded by the Association’s AGM.
