Yourself and your DNA

Our May meeting was held on 11 May at 8pm in Lackagh Parish Centre. Patrick Larkin, President of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society, delivered a talk on aspects of DNA with regard to its applications to family history research.

Abstract:

This highly-illustrated presentation explain the concepts behind DNA testing; the terminology used, and the process (and costs) of testing employed to get results. DNA tests can help you find family, break through brick walls and trace your lineage back through time.

Depending on the tests chosen, and the expenditure made, tests can confirm one’s family, ancestral tribe, clan, kingdom or nation, as well as one’s likely geographic origins and associated timelines. The reasons for testing will be provided, and the choices and expectations outlined.

The differences in our paternal and maternal DNA and heritage will be explored and explained. Examples of test results will be provided, and interpreted. The usefulness of on-going results comparison with other tested persons will be explained. Limitations of the whole DNA process will be explored.
