Unconsecrated Burial Grounds in South-East Galway
A study of the children’s burial grounds in two south-east Galway parishes

The March meeting was held on Wednesday 11th March in Lackagh Parish Centre at the usual time of 8.15pm. Our speaker on the night was Declan Kelly. His talk was on the topic of children’s burial grounds, using as examples burial grounds in two south-east Galway parishes, the subject of his M.A. thesis work carried out at the National University of Ireland, Galway.

A graduate of NUI Galway, Declan Kelly completed a MA degree with 1st class honours at NUI Galway in 2012 and won the prestigious Waddell Prize for Excellence in Landscape Archaeology for a dissertation on Children’s burial grounds in southeast Galway. Declan was archivist to Clonfert diocese for some 10 years.  He has published a history of Clonfert diocese as well as quite a number of books including Images of Ballinasloe,  Loughrea: A Parish History, and ‘A Moment’s Memory Volume 1’ – a personal and historical reflection on Creagh National School and District, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.

Declan’s book ‘Creagh: A Personal and Historical Reflection‘ is available to purchase from Salmons Department Store, Main Street, Ballinasloe.  It contains the enrolments from 1871-1911 for Creagh National School, Ballinasloe together with information on local families.

The library was open for members who wish to borrow or return books from 7:45pm on the evening.
